Today in Star Wars history, Lucasfilm take Star Wars to court...

On November 25th, 1985, Lucasfilm lawyers meet with U.S. District Judge Gerhard Gesell in an attempt to block journalists and political advertisements from using the phrase “Star Wars,” at least while referencing President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, the so-called “Star Wars program.”

As well as accusations of trademark infringement, lawyer Lawrence Hefter states,

“Star Wars, your Honor, is a fantasy. It’s something that doesn’t exist.”

He claims that associating the family-friendly space opera and the space-based missile defense system will, “cause children and parents to tend to shy away from Star Wars.”

Not that Star Wars has ever used lasers or missiles or anything...

Lucasfilm ultimately loses the lawsuit.
